Answering the Tough Questions

by Kerri Carpenter

I’m about to say something shocking. Prepare yourself.

Not everyone reads romance. (WHY!?!?!?)

Because of that, there seems to be a lot of curiosity surrounding the romance world. In fact, there are a couple of phrases and questions that I hear from non-romance readers so often I thought it would be a good idea to offer some answers and replies. After all, August IS Romance Awareness Month.

  1. I don’t read romance.

BUT THEY’RE SOOOO GOOD! Not reading romance is like not oohing and aahing over adorable little puppies or hating Santa Claus.

  1. Do you practice your sex scenes?

(Typically accompanied with a wink, nudge-nudge, or smug head nod.)

I’ll admit I understand the curiosity. However, I will never, ever give an honest answer to this question.

  1. Something about Fabio. Anything. Seriously, anything at all. No, really, anything about Fabio.

Fabio. Oh Fabio. I wonder if he knew what an impact he would have on the romance world. And no, he is not on the cover of any of my books.

  1. Where do you get your ideas?

This is definitely one of the top three questions I get asked and I really wish I had a good, solid answer. Sadly, I don’t. I have no clue where my ideas originate. But I can tell you that I am very influenced by TV, movies, and pop culture. And the majority of my books are conceived while I walk my dog, Harry.

  1. When do you find time to write?

Whenever I can! Yes, I have a day job. I have become a master at multitasking. I utilize my crockpot. I beg family and friends for help. And then I sit my butt down and challenge myself to write. I love a good challenge.

  1. Have you always wanted to be a romance writer?

No. I have almost always wanted to be a writer. I did toy with being a princess and/or waitress for a while.  But it didn’t take long to find my path to writing. I didn’t start reading romance novels until college. Once I did, my path became even clearer.

  1. When are you going to write a real book?

Hmmm, I’m not sure what qualifies something to be a “real book.” I was under the impression that my books were real. Romance novels always have a happy ending. They spread love, happiness, and hope to readers, and it doesn’t get much more real than that.

I hope I’ve answered some of the tough questions. But if I haven’t, certainly leave me a comment (or find me on social media) and ask away. Happy Romance Awareness Month and happy reading!

If you love romance as much as me, you should check out my book, Tempting Mr. Wrong, on sale for only 99 cents for one week.

About the book:

A little temptation never hurt anyone…

Lance Townsend craves freedom after years living a structured existence in the Army. But just as he’s about to start on his bucket list, Lance receives an unexpected request: check in on his goddaughter. The problem? The adorable little girl’s aunt is the one woman he’s never been able to forget.

Carly Quigley can’t believe her brother’s best friend, the man who jilted her years ago, is at her door. He claims her brother asked him to check in on her niece and their fixer-upper, but all either of them can focus on is their undeniable attraction. Carly knows Lance is counting down the hours to leave, which makes him the wrong man for her. Unfortunately, the wrong man has become oh-so-tempting.

Yes, a crockpot! I imagine it is a friend to many a writer. I happen to love your books and your voice. Sometimes I resonate as a reader with the darker stuff, but I absolutely love your books because I know there are going to be guaranteed moments in there where I am going to laugh my head off or get the warm and fuzzies. Thank you for putting that out there!
