A taste of Barbados

by Donna Every

WhatNowEvery time I write a book I can’t help but include something about my beautiful island Barbados, to give my readers from other countries a taste of the island. Apart from my historical novel The Price of Freedom, which was set mainly in Barbados, and to a lesser extent in Carolina (before it became South Carolina) my novels have been set in the US but I always bring my characters to Barbados for a visit.

You may wonder how I sit in Barbados and write about the US. Apart from being quite a frequent visitor to the US, the Internet is a marvelous tool and provides a wealth of information. In my last book What Now? I had a wonderful time researching some of the luxury hotels that my hero, rock star Nick Badley, stayed at on the US end of his world tour and I often described actual rooms that were featured online.

Barbados hotelIn other cases I’ve been fortunate to visit the places myself and was able to use my experiences to set the scene in the book.  For example, about three years ago, I stood by the wall where Nick and Shari squeezed into a space to watch the fountains at Bellagio and enjoyed the dancing fountains.

In What Now? my hero Nick “decided” to have a New Year’s Eve party in Barbados and rented a villa on the West Coast of the island where 100 of his closest celebrity friends, partied until five o’clock in the morning.  The West Coast of Barbados, as Nick said in the book, is where most celebrities hang out.

BarbadosThe great thing about Barbados which Nick “discovered” when he visited, is that Barbadians are quite reserved and therefore celebrities can walk about without fear of being mobbed. Maybe that’s why so many celebrities come here. Or maybe it’s simply to get a taste of our beautiful island. Download a copy of What Now? and get your taste of what Nick experienced when he visited Barbados.
